5 Helpful Tips for CH Pet Parents

Greetings Pet Parents!

One thing I have learned since being introduced to Cerebellar Hypoplasia, is that there is a lot to learn! Each case is unique and every day your kitty grows there will be new challenges. Because of this, there is no right or wrong, only what works for you and your fur babies! For those who are new to this world, or haven’t found the perfect solution to your problem yet, I offer my top 5 tips!

1. Fountains!
Rumpel loves his fountain. As with any CH pet, we saw right away he wasn’t able to drink from the bowl without dunking his head in the water, so he was not drinking at all. The more he concentrates the worse the head shakes get, which means even more bobbing! The fountain is the perfect solution. The small stream is nice and easy to lap up, plus the filter and running water keeps it cool and clean! Bonus!

2. Non-Slip Bowl Mats
I do not find this works great for water, but using these special mats for food can make eating so much simpler for any wobbler, and prevent those inevitable ‘Oops!’ there’s cat food all over the house moments. I use both sides for food since these CH kitties never to be quite full!

3. Litter Dome!
The biggest issue I’ve seen CH parents have is not knowing what to do about the litter box. Most CH cats cannot use a normal one, or really hurt themselves trying, since if they can get into it they are essentially throwing themselves into it. I have found this litter dome is awesome! It has a ramp that leads into the litter so no more scrapes and scratches or weird litter contraptions. Plus no more litter all over the floor!

4. Crash Helmets!
If you have a very active kitty like I do, you may want to look into head protection. Unfortunately they don’t sell these as far as I know, but above are some ideas for home made head gear. It might look silly but when your cat is particularly active, slipping these on could save your cat from some serious injuries from all the bonks and falls. Plus I think they are adorable!

5. Cover Your Floors!
Carpets, rugs and mats! Get those down. They already have so much slipping and sliding going on, save your fur babies the extra frustration and injury! Save them from embarrassing moments like these! Whoops!
